How can you write a Genre story without copying other stories in the Genre?
Q. I want to write a story in a particular genre but most of my ideas are used in other stories, or the ideas might be outside the genre and wouldn't really make sense. (ie; Writing a story about King Arthur fighting dragons and searching for the holy grail. Or writing a story about King Arthur and giving him a sawed-off shotgun.) How can you write a story in a Genre without copying other ideas, if the genre is defined by those kind of ideas?

A. Combine them. If you mix the ideas all together, then it becomes a unique idea that is yours.

What spooky stories do you have to share?
Q. It's getting closer to Halloween and want some scary stories to listen to. I've already heard Bloody Mary, The hook man, and the clown statue. Shoot, you could even make up your own scary story. Although, I'll tell you something freaky I learned about my house. As my mother was washing dishes, I asked her how she got this house. She said an old man died in this house before and she bought it. A chill went down my spine when I heard that.

My father tells fabricated stories about himself and others. How do I get him to stop?
Q. Sometimes the stories involve family members or friends, or even celebrities. They are definitely not true. But, if you call him out he gets furious and majorly defensive- he may even believe them. I can't stand for it anymore. He tells me not to tell my mom some of the stories- because they may involve sex (none where he cheats, but rather where people will hit on him.) How do I get him to stop involving me and how can I get him help without him screaming at me?

How do I get my scary stories published?
Q. I write scary stories that are shorter than a normal chapter in a book (usually), not like Stephen King novels. I really want to do a collection and publish the book, but I don't really know how to get noticed, get an agent, etc. A few people I know were saying to send my stories to magazines, but which magazines, and would they take such long stories? All help is appreciated!
Asked by ** rose ** - Tue Jul 28 19:14:47 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. How short are these books? Publishers normally require you at least to have 46 pages for black and white and 24 for full colored. You may probably decide which way you want to go if you have exhausted all options. Perhaps its best still if you happen to have a publishing plan mapped out and then go from there. What are your thoughts on publishing the whole thing yourself while waiting for agents to do it for you? There are actually lots of chances for agents/editors/publishers to take notice of your book once they see the finished product. In the meantime, I'll give you something to peruse while you are at it. Let me know if you have questions. :)

What magazines or newspapers accept stories for publication?
Q. I'm looking for some place I can submit a couple of my stories. Please don't say Writer's Digest, I've already got that one covered and want to know about any others. The stories are mostly fiction and a little bit educational I guess you could say. Any help would be appreciated.
Asked by Jennifer H - Fri Jun 6 17:12:33 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Jennifer, you need to pick up Writer's Market, a book by the people who issue Writer's Market, or sign up for their website (which is not free). They list many markets for fiction, sorted by genre, and give some writers' guidelines for each. Another way is to spend a few hours at a place with a really good magazine selection, like a major bookstore. Scan lots of them to identify places which publish work something like yours.

How can I make my stories more tropical?

A. I think what your friend is referring to is the Miami look. Most people are getting tired of the ugly dirty scenes of cities we often see in the movies and find in books. To days people want to see and read beauty (not in women and men, but scenes). Slums are out, Miami look is in.

How can I protect my rights to stories I write and read to friends who are studying media in college?
Q. I have been writing stories that my friends and family really like and they like me to read them out loud to everyone. I do voice impersonations of all the characters, that are based on friends and family. I am looking for advice about how to protect the rights to my stories that I read out loud. Some of my friends work or study in the media field and are interested in collaborating with me on some projects involving my stories. Thanks in advance.

A. Am not very acknowledgeable in this field but I would recommend you to browse a more suitable category as your question does not fit the criteria of this section. It is neither a part of the comic or animation industry as far as the question informs me and it inquires the answerer's input in copyright laws and the like, I would guarantee you a better response had you posted in a more suitable section. e.g Arts and Humanities (Literature is a sub-branch of humanities as far as I know) or Local Businesses (maybe?)

How can I get my short stories published?
Q. Do I send them in to magazines or to a publisher? Which magazines publish short stories? If my story is accepted will I get paid for it and how much, round about?
Asked by Fortuna P - Wed Sep 5 04:38:12 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The Writers' Handbook 2007 may help. It has a list of Publishers and Agents who you can send them to. From my experience, I'd start with the publishers, as agents are too swamped to deal with them. Do you have a whole book's worth of short stories to publish? You could try self-publishing on sites like www.lulu.com. Or try joining a writers' forum like and ask around. There are plenty of published authors on there

A. ... depends on the author and on the length of the stories. I have two volumes of O. Henry short stories--one had 10 stories, the other 100. Both felt just right, even though they were written by the same writer! But the 100 story long one had shorter stories, and O. Henry stories are really easy to get through (quick, zippy dialogue, etc.). By contrast, a 5-10 story long compendium of Poe stories felt too long--he's a bit repetitive and heavy-handed, IMHO.

A. A thousands words is more often considered flash fiction. Each magazine and ezine has its own preferred word counts, so check submission guidelines to see whether the places you'd most like to see it appear will accept a story that short.

Q. I'm thinking along the lines of something like PostSecret, but not that because you cannot submit emails, and those are usually one sentence stories.
