Mr. Rothman's list of Contemporary American Authors?
Q. On a walk to remember, a "list" is mentioned. Mr. Rothman's list of contemporary author's. Apparently there's an American list and British list etc. I was wondering where I could find a copy of this list if it is in fact an actual list. Thank you in advance.

Q. I have summer reading for school next year and I have to read 2 books written by american authors. I am kind of picky with the types of books, I need it to be an interesting book. I like books along the lines of war, sports, something that will keep me interested through the whole book

A. I personally like suspense Dan Brown Stephen King Tess Gerritson James Patterson John Grisham I also like many classics and traditional fiction... But everyone has their own tastes... I don't read sports books, so I can't help you on that account. I did read 1776 by David McCullough, about the Revolutionary War, which was pretty good, but I'm not a war-book fan. Another book covering the Revolutionary War which I read was General George Washington: A Military Life. I enjoyed it. Then, of course, there's Hiroshima. I read that back in high school. Now, for a different kind of recommendation... crossing the "suspense books" and "war books" themes... James Patterson wrote a suspense novel called "London Bridges" (it's part of his "A [cont.]

American Literature project (authors)?
Q. I'm in an honors level english American Literature class and we have to read three books by an author and then write a ten page report on the author themselves. Can anyone come up with a list of authors I may be able to do for my American Literature project that would be very impressive. (Ex. Ernest Hemingway) Please, nothing like Jodi Piccoult... And they must be American Authors, which crosses out Charles Dickens etc. thankyou :]

A. It's just really sad to me that modern authors' work isn't considered literature because it wasn't written 50 years ago. Even writers like Ken Kesey (One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest) isn't considered a literary author. Only Hemingway and Steinbeck get that honor and I don't like it. There are some really great authors out there. I also ask myself who this "group" is that decides what qualifies at literature and what does not. I mean, who are they that set these "rules" in place? I just wonder...but that's not answering your question. Um, since apparently literature never changes ( because new authors can't get in), it's just the same authors as usual. John Steinbeck, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Harper Lee- the usual crew. Even MAry Shelley's work… [cont.]

A. Hiroshima is the John Hersey book, yes? (I'm going by the date here, there are actually several books with that title). If that's the case, you should do some research on just how this book came about. It wasn't originally a book -- it was an entire special issue of the New Yorker that helped spark a small but vocal anti-bombing movement, which ultimately resulted in the Feb. 1947 Henry Stimson article in Harper's that was basically meant to quiet the rebellious mutterings and that also gave us the argument that the bombings saved a million American lives. So the impact of the book might not be as obvious as, say, The Grapes of Wrath, but I would say it still had a profound impact. You'll just need a lot of good research to back it up. … [cont.]

What is the process that search engines like Yahoo and Google use to list the order of a search?
Q. My example was that I punched in the name of a book by an Armenian-American author who teaches at Colgate but instead of Amazon being the first in line to come up it was 3rd while a small Turkish sponsored website which refutes the genocide came up 1st. I am this question for no other reason than to understand how these search engines come up with their results as the results disturb me.
Asked by Chris M - Tue Nov 20 18:43:32 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There is a whole science into it. Google and other search engines cannot manually review every resource - there are gazillions of web pages indexed by them. Tey use their own algorithms that determine the ranking (order) of pages in the search results. Those algorithms have been developed over years - they use dozens of factors, are quite complicated and are not publicly disclosed. If you are interested in details, search for "Google SEO" and explore the links below.

Is Schindler's List a good book?
Q. We are doing an independent novel unit in my advanced sophomore English class. The guidelines are: the book has to be 200 pages (easy) and must be written by a non-American author. I think I'm going to read Schindler's List but I'm not completely sure. So is it good? Or does anyone have any suggestions. I kind of want to read a book about the holocaust. At first I wanted to read Night by Elie Weisel but it's not 200 pages. Does anyone know of a book like it?

Any recommendations for romantic American Classic Literature?
Q. I'm going to have to do a research project, and I didn't like the list she gave me. So I was wondering if anyone had any books by American authors that were romantic, and intriguing. Also it needs to have some sort of literary merit. This is for an Honors English class. So please, any suggestion would be helpful. If you could include a little summary, or a link to the synopsis, it would be great! Thank you in advance! Romantic, as in the genre or the story has romance, and also sorry if I was not clear, but I'm looking for novels. Hope this info helps. Romantic is just my preference.

English 2 Honors, Summer Reading Quest.?
Q. Okay, well i need help on finding some books to read over the summer for my English 2 Honors Class. I have to read a Current Contemporary American Fiction book. The author must be from America, the plot, themes, characters, and the setting must strictly relate to America. It must be a book from the New York Times book Review's "Bestsellers" lists from June 1, 2006 to the present. Harry potter, The Da Vinci Code, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy are not acceptable. They didnt give us a list of Authors and i need some help finding some. Can anyone name an American author, whose plot, themes, characters, and setting strictly relate to America ?

A. Hi. I went to Barnes and Nobles site and typed "new york times bestsellers" and all their books came up. You can pick your favorite from there. If you see the book Born Blue by Han Nolan, I recommend it highly assuming you are a mature child. It is realistic fiction, interesting, and hard to put down. It strictly relates to American teens today. It won all kinds of awards and I recommend it assuming you enjoy realistic fiction. It is a bit "edgy" so if you are a Harry Potter type, you might not enjoy it. A couple others I recommend are "First Part Last" and also, Walter Dean Myers "The Handbook for Boys." Both would fulfill your objectives. (Show, or email your teacher and maybe she would let you substitute out these books in… [cont.]

Need a Summer Reading Book
Q. I have been looking and I can't make up my mind on a book I want to read this summer. I need to read a book by an american author. Here is the link to my assignment. Go to the second page and there are a list of "Suggested Authors". summer assignments/Resource Room Soph.pdf I'm asking if you know a good book by one of those authors, please tell me the name of the book and which author it is. But make sure it isn't in the "excluded" list. Or if you know a good book to read that's by any American author that you know for sure of but isn't on the list, please add that too! I'm a Sophomore in High School if that would help pick a book. THANKS!

A. Night is a good suggestion. This authors' list provides you with different style of stories. Crichton, Clark and Cook are more mystery/thriller types of books. Mitch Albom writes nice stories too.

I'm looking for a side-by-side comparison of the characteristics of realism vs. naturalism in American Lit.?
Q. Like a link to some kind of side by side chart. I had one in my notes from class but i lost it. I dont need examples of texts or authors, just a list of the traits of each style.

A. Here's a webpage that goes over the main characteristics of realism and naturalism. It's not a side-by-side chart, but it should do. Cheers.

Good Books for 13-year-old Girl?
Q. My daughter's 13th birthday is coming up and she loves to read. I'm trying to find new titles and series titles that she would love. She's not into the Twilight series, but she loved Harry Potter. She's read the series by Louise Rennison and loved that as well. She likes The Cheetah Girl movies but didn't care for the books. She read the Alice series and loved those too.Of course she is addicted to HSM and The Jonas Brothers, if that helps. I'm just trying to compose a list of titles that I would purchase for her. Giving her a gift cards for books won't help because she will stay in the store for hours and won't choose anything for herself but she loves when I recommend titles. The problem is I'm out of suggestions. She's read the Little… [cont.]

A. If she likes Louise Rennison she'll probably like "Girl, 15, charming but insane" by Sue Limb or One of the books by Jacqueline Wilson (Tracy Beaker, Lola Rose, Candyfloss etc) She may like books by Malorie Blackman. A great series by her is the Naughts and Crosses series. Maybe she'd like a book by Darren Shan? He writes a great series that starts with "Cirque du Freak". I read them when I was your daughter's age. They are a little scary as they are about vampires, but they're not too long and there are several in the series so when she finishes one she can just walk into the book shop and pick up another! She might like the goosebumps books. They're not too scary but talk about things coming to life etc etc. I'm about a year older than… [cont.]
