Q. I have summer reading for school next year and I have to read 2 books written by american authors. I am kind of picky with the types of books, I need it to be an interesting book. I like books along the lines of war, sports, something that will keep me interested through the whole book

A. I personally like suspense Dan Brown Stephen King Tess Gerritson James Patterson John Grisham I also like many classics and traditional fiction... But everyone has their own tastes... I don't read sports books, so I can't help you on that account. I did read 1776 by David McCullough, about the Revolutionary War, which was pretty good, but I'm not a war-book fan. Another book covering the Revolutionary War which I read was General George Washington: A Military Life. I enjoyed it. Then, of course, there's Hiroshima. I read that back in high school. Now, for a different kind of recommendation... crossing the "suspense books" and "war books" themes... James Patterson wrote a suspense novel called "London Bridges" (it's part of his "A [cont.]

List some American books- around 1750-1850?
Q. I have some independent reading due and I'm searching for a novel published around 1750-1850, written by an american author. The topic can be about anything; while I've already found some books to consider, none of them look particularly interesting. I'd like a novel that's especially entertaining & a good read, if possible (: Thanks!

A. Well, there weren't that many novels published before 1850. I'll mention some in no particular order. James Fenimore Cooper probably wrote more novels than nearly anyone else. The Leather stocking Series which includes The Deerslayer, The Pathfinder, The Last of the Mohicans, The Pioneers and The Prarie. Charles Brockden Brown who wrote some really weird works including Weiland and Ormond; Edgar Allen Poe who wrote one novel which isn't nearly as good as his short stories and poetry: The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym; Nathaniel Hawthorne who wrote The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables and The Blithedale Romance (some of which were slightly after 1850.) Herman Melville who wrote Moby Dick (published in 1851) and Typee.

Official list of best selling authors in the US?
Q. Not asking who YOU think are the best authors, incidentally. But now and then you hear a statistic in an article, like 'Terry Pratchett is the 7th best selling Non-American author in the US'. Where IS this top ten? Any idea? Jemms: Nod, there's a fair few lists of best sellers, and I've seen many lists of the most popular novels, singularly. What I'm really looking for is best selling authors considered across their whole works, though. For instance, I've seen sites that say JK Rowling is the best selling author in the UK, Terry Pratchett the second; it doesn't mention Deathly Hallows or any of the others, just the books all together. Surely there's somewhere you can see this top ten of authors, for the UK, US, or even worldwide?

A. I know that the NY Times publishes their top ten list for non-fiction and fiction writers. This is a list that many people go off of.

Good American Authors?
Q. Can anyone suggest good authors who are of American origin? I've been given an assignment where I have to pick an American author and read 3 novels by that author. I've also been given quite an extensive list to choose from (3 pages, front and back, size 10 font), so once I've gotten some ideas, I'll check to make sure they're on the list. My personal preference is fiction, but I try to avoid fantasy and sci-fi. The class itself is Honors English 2 (sophomore class). Thanks!

A. Hiroshima is the John Hersey book, yes? (I'm going by the date here, there are actually several books with that title). If that's the case, you should do some research on just how this book came about. It wasn't originally a book -- it was an entire special issue of the New Yorker that helped spark a small but vocal anti-bombing movement, which ultimately resulted in the Feb. 1947 Henry Stimson article in Harper's that was basically meant to quiet the rebellious mutterings and that also gave us the argument that the bombings saved a million American lives. So the impact of the book might not be as obvious as, say, The Grapes of Wrath, but I would say it still had a profound impact. You'll just need a lot of good research to back it up. … [cont.]

Can anyone give me a list of really good black authors?
Q. All through high school, teachers had everyone reading nothing but American Literature. While some of it was good, I feel like I missed out on a lot. I don't know any of the African American Literature because I have never been exposed to it. What are some good black authors? I'm looking for everything from poetry to non fiction. Novels, Journals...everything that I can get. Suggestions of titles would be wonderful too.

A. OH... you've come to the right place, my child... I even put them in a chronological order to the best of my knowledge. I didn't do this for points... questions like these keep me on game for next semester ;) I'm sorry that your school does not teach any of these authors and I will keep that in mind to investigate in the future. P.S. I have to warn you that James Baldwin especially gets quite graphic in some of his short stories. Harriet Jacobs Fredrick Douglas Booker T. Washington W.E.B. Dubois Langston Hughes Ida B. Wells Barnett Zora Hurston Carl Sandburg Claude McKay Marianne Moore Gwendolyn Brooks Richard Wright Countee Cullen James Baldwin Ralph Ellison Toni Morrison

Q. I'm going to have to do a research project, and I didn't like the list she gave me. So I was wondering if anyone had any books by American authors that were romantic, and intriguing. Also it needs to have some sort of literary merit. This is for an Honors English class. So please, any suggestion would be helpful. Romantic, as in the genre or the story has romance, and also sorry if I was not clear, but I'm looking for novels. Hope this info helps. Romantic is just my preference.

A. Why don't you try the books of Edith Wharton, namely The House of Mirth (Lily Bart is a celebrated beauty who has to pay her whole life for one moment of deviance from the customs and exigences of society. She has always wanted to marry for money for as she puts it '[she] is expensive to maintain'. She is unable to marry the man she loves (Lawrence Sedley)simply because he is too poor.At the end, she dies, presumably from an overdose of sleeping pills, which we suspect to have been wilfully taken), The Custom of the Country ( Undine Spragg is a very beautiful young girl who is seeking to marry somebody rich. She has a dark past which is only hinted at and until we hear of it by direct reference we believe that it is only a broken… [cont.]

Reading list of Centreville High School, Fairfaix, VA?
Q. For juniors, the site just says read a novel by an American author but is that really all? Starting new at the school, tried my counselor's email but no response. And no friends at the school, or even in Virginia itself >_>

A. Well, I don't know the reading list or even the school you are talking about, but it would seem smart to me if you just chose one of the classics written by an American author. If you are still not sure, then just email/call the school or even a friend who might know.

English 2 Honors, Summer Reading Quest.?
Q. Okay, well i need help on finding some books to read over the summer for my English 2 Honors Class. I have to read a Current Contemporary American Fiction book. The author must be from America, the plot, themes, characters, and the setting must strictly relate to America. It must be a book from the New York Times book Review's "Bestsellers" lists from June 1, 2006 to the present. Harry potter, The Da Vinci Code, and the Lord of the Rings trilogy are not acceptable. They didnt give us a list of Authors and i need some help finding some. Can anyone name an American author, whose plot, themes, characters, and setting strictly relate to America ?

A. Hi. I went to Barnes and Nobles site and typed "new york times bestsellers" and all their books came up. You can pick your favorite from there. If you see the book Born Blue by Han Nolan, I recommend it highly assuming you are a mature child. It is realistic fiction, interesting, and hard to put down. It strictly relates to American teens today. It won all kinds of awards and I recommend it assuming you enjoy realistic fiction. It is a bit "edgy" so if you are a Harry Potter type, you might not enjoy it. A couple others I recommend are "First Part Last" and also, Walter Dean Myers "The Handbook for Boys." Both would fulfill your objectives. (Show, or email your teacher and maybe she would let you substitute out these books in… [cont.]

A. Go with Mark Twain. His material is both substantive and very entertaining. You will have plenty to work with if you consider this great American author for your project.
