What author do you recommend for good mystery novels?
Q. Or suspense. I've read and loved all of Reginald Hill and James Lee Burke and I'd like to find another author I'd like equally well. Don't know where to start though. Thanks!

A. You have got to read tess gerritsen!! (Forgive me for the caps, but she really is that great!) If you are into crime(medical)/thriller this is what you are looking for! 'Harvest' was Gerritsen's thriller that brought her onto the mainstream market where everyone began to appreciate her skill for writing a great thriller novel. So I suggest that you start there.. Harvest is the book when Gerritsen ultimately draws on her years of experience as a doctor to deliver a harrowing and brilliantly crafted novel of suspense. When a heart intended for a transplant, has its origin questioned by a doctor, and nothing can prepare her for the grisly final reckoning. Hope this helps!! Good luck finding the right author for you. xxx

How many copies should an author sell to become a millionaire?
Q. When I grow up, I really want to be an author. I was wondering if authors are rich. How many copies should one sell in to become a millionaire?! Thanks!
Asked by :D - Thu Jul 3 14:23:58 2008 - - 3 Answers - 1 Comments
A. Really depends on how your contract is structured with your publisher. If the Book Retails at 35.99/copy when it comes out in Hardcover and you get 3.00/copy then you would need to sell 333,333 copies to make a million. Yes Authors are rich once they become known. It may take you a while to get there, but don't give up hope. If you really enjoy doing it you will succeed

Which author or poet would you recommend interviewing for a school project?
Q. It's for my advanced creative writing class and I need to find an author or a poet to do a project on where I have to make a presentation on them and then do a piece of work that mirrors their style. I need to interview my author to find out more about them. Sharon Creech doesn't have any direct contact information. So, I'd need someone else. But I do love Creech's work though. I own the book Absolutely Normal Chaos, and I've read it many times.

What is a website where an author can check to see if a certain story or concept has already been published?
Q. I've heard of a website where an author can double-check to make sure their idea hasn't already been published so they don't infringe on copyright or duplicate an existing work.
Asked by Cheryl H - Mon Mar 29 14:31:37 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments
A. As long as you write an original work and are not copying the stories or the wording of what someone else has written you are fine. It's okay to do things that are derivative. Like use dragons or make a story about two people falling in love in a castle, which is stuff that has been done by so many people. You cannot however use the characters or the locations of an already existing place. Most importantly however, the wording and the voice of the book has to be yours. You can't use the sentence structure or exact wordnig or even similar wording to what some other author has done. The only way to do this, is to actually read a book and look at a sentence you like and then include a sentence in your book that sounds very similar to it.… [cont.]

How do you know when an author makes an allusion?
Q. Like when you read, how do you know if the author's making an allusion? How do you spot it and know what they are talking about?
Asked by The Narrator of FC - Thu Oct 4 03:10:15 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. This probably isn't that helpful, but nobody's answered yet so I'll give it a shot. I usually can't tell if an author is making an allusion at all unless I am familiar with what the author is referring to. One really simple example is the Weird Sisters band in Harry Potter. If you've read Shakespeare's Macbeth, you're familiar with the three witches at the beginning, the Weird Sisters. (And if you weren't familiar with Macbeth, you'd have no idea Rowling was making an allusion at all!) Of course, this isn't a very good example because the similarities stop there. Ken Kesey often makes Christ and Shakespeare allusions in his writings, often I read when something that sounds familiar I'll google it and try to find the source, so I can… [cont.]

What is the title and author of this book about a bear that publishes a book and lives as a human?
Q. I think it might be called Bear but basically there is an author who writes a book while in a cave, but loses the manuscript and leaves. A bear finds it, learns how to read, starts acting like a human, and gets the book published. Later the original author sues him, but fails, and the bear is pressured into writing a sequel, but finds it difficult. What is the name and author of this book? Thanks. The Bear Went Over the Mountain (1996) is a novel by William Kotzwinkle.

What are good ideas for an author wanting to write a new book?
Q. I am an aspiring author and I need some original ideas for writing a book. So any ideas would be helpful. maybe things you want to see happen in a book, or even ideas of what might make a great book.
Asked by Jessica - Mon Jul 6 15:23:20 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Here, becaust the author should come up with the idea here are some things to help you think about that idea. You should try to picture the scene in your head before you write it. When you lay in bed at night think about what you want to happen in your book. You should do little exersises on your characters. Like making fake ones for no book, and trying to describe them as best as possiable. Once you finish each chapter spend at least a whole week editing. Get books on writers digest to help. When you have a exiting idea right it down, and go back to the "boring" stuff latter. I hope I helped. :)

A. Hi there. I am a published author. My first hard cover book just came out a month ago. The title is the blackgloom bounty. You can find it at all major bookstores and online e-tailers like Amazon. It's a medieval fantasy epic with lots of mysticism, magic and mayhem. The main characters are mostly teenagers, too. This book took about 3 years to write and another 2 years to get published. It has been reviewed very highly in the mainstream media and is being considered for a movie production. As for your own writing, my best advice is never give up. Write every day, whether you want to or not. That's how you become a true writer. And study grammar and spelling! Most computer spell checkers will NOT catch mistakes like using "affect"… [cont.]

A. Sorry, I don't know what MLA stands for, so don't know their particular format ... but a reasonable approximation would seem to be, first to credit the author in just the same way as you would if the quotation were from his own book (for example, "King, Martin L., 'I Have A Dream'"); and then second, within the same citation, the word, "in," followed by the name of the editor of the book containing the speeches, and the book's title, somewhat along these lines ... Example citation: King, Martin L., "I Have A Dream," in Jones, Milton A., ed., Famous American Speeches, New York: Random House, 1975. Naturally, you would adjust that to comply with as much of the MLA format you're familiar with; but it would have to be more or less like… [cont.]

Q. Whats the correct format? Is it (authand page number from your current source, as used in author and page number from his source)? Do i have to include more information, such as the title of the book he used, or do I have to put it in my bibliography? Thanks :)
Asked by Anon - Fri Dec 19 05:04:05 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It really depends on the requirements of the school/college/ university. Most will give you a preferred means of referencing and citing. If you are not clear on this or haven't been supplied, you can look up commonly used bibliography styles or citation styles. Quite often what you will need is a (Author Name, Publication Date, Page Number) reference within the text that you are writing, following the particular quote/citation. This is backed up by your bibliography which includes further information, such as Book/Paper/Journal Name, Edition, Publisher Name & Location etc. etc. To be safe, you should check to see what the acceptable format is where ever you are submitting this paper to.

A. Um...Beatrix Potter lived near a cemetery; she used names from some of the tombstones for characters in her books. I don't know if that helps at all, cos I don't think she lived across from a cemetery, just near by.
