The Virginian (sometimes titled The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains) is a pioneering Wild West novel by the American author Owen Wister, published in 1902. The copyright has long since expired, and it is available on the Internet. The book was dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt, a good friend of Owen Wister.

Plot summary

Ostensibly a love story, the novel really revolves around a fictionalized version of the Johnson County War in 1890s Wyoming. The real Johnson County War was a dispute between large ranchers and smaller operators over cattle theft. The novel takes the side of the large ranchers, and depicts the lynchings as frontier justice, meted out by the protagonist, who is a member of a natural aristocracy among men; this theme of the wilderness as a magnifying glass for humans' inherent qualities is also found in other fiction of the period, such as Tarzan of the Apes. In a central episode, the protagonist participates in the lynching of an admitted cattle thief, who had been his close friend. The lynching is represented as a necessary response to the government's corruption and lack of action, but the protagonist feels it to be a horrible duty. He is especially stricken by the bravery with which the thief faces his fate, and the heavy burden it places on his heart forms the emotional core of the story. The romance between the Virginian and the young eastern school teacher Miss Molly Wood is cleverly woven into the main plot.

What are some good novels that take place in the American West (anywhere from 1830 to 1890)?
Q. I'm NOT looking for books written by Louis L'amour or Zane Grey (as I already know about them) and I prefer books that are not part of a series (unless it's a trilogy). I read the following books: The Oxbow Incident, the Oregon Trail, On to Oregon, Roughing It, and the Virginian.

A. Here is a site that lists many books that are true stories about the lives of those who lived and dies back in the 1800's But if you are looking for novels specifically that ar stories that the setting is back in the 1800's this Author Linda Lael Miller, she writes a lot of books and the Novels are single novels versus a part of a series. She is a very famour writer and issues a new novel on an average of every 12 to 18 months I would guess. However, she has enough writings right now in circulation to keep you bizzy for awhile and you can find them at your local library. Best of luck!

Do I write something like: Tinkering with Eden, by Kim Todd, is a historical novel discussing and describing the foreign creatures of America. A. "an historical book"... Also, a novel cannot be "historical." This would make the genre "Expository." But, a novel is "Fiction" unless it is a work of "Realistic Fiction." (Facts with a story that could have happened.) If everything in the book is documented, again, not a novel. Get clear on the genre. You write extremely well. Clearly you have read this book. What I did: Get The NY Times on Sunday and use the NY Times Book Review as your template. Your closing can be whether or not you suggest that others read it. Nice job!
