We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. This is a list of novelists from the United States, listed with titles of a major work for each.

This is not intended to be a list of every American (born U.S. citizen, naturalized citizen, or long-time resident alien) who has published a novel. (For the purposes of this article, novel is defined as an extended work of fiction. This definition is loosely interpreted to include novellas, novelettes, and books of interconnected short stories.) Novelists on this list have achieved a notability that exceeds merely having been published. The writers on the current list fall into one or more of the following categories:

  1. Winner of a major literary prize, even if the winning work was a story collection rather than a novel: The Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the American Book Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Orange Prize, and some others. (Note: The only Pulitzer winner for Fiction not on the list is James Alan McPherson, who has never published a novel.)
  2. Having a substantial body of work, widely respected and reviewed in major publications, and perhaps often nominated or a finalist for major awards.
  3. A pioneering literary figure, possibly for the style or substance of their entire body of work, or for a single novel that was a notable "first" of some kind in U.S. literary history.
  4. Had several massive bestsellers, or even just one huge seller that has entered the cultural lexicon (Grace Metalious and Peyton Place, for example).
  5. A leading figure—especially award winning, and with crossover appeal to mainstream readers, reviewers, and scholars—in a major genre or subcategory of fiction: Science fiction, fantasy, horror, mystery, western, young adult fiction, regional or "local color" fiction, proletarian fiction, etc.
This is an incomplete list, which may never be able to satisfy certain standards for completion. You can help by expanding it with reliably sourced additions.

Established American publishers - question for only published writers?
Q. Plz, a list of established American publisher I am not interested in Vanity press or subsidy publishers. I did my list but I want your opinion as experienced published writers. As I learned: a commercial publisher purchases the right to publish a manuscript and pays a royalty on sales. There are no costs to the author.

A. Sela C is right. There are countless publishers and The Writer's Market is probably the best place to find the one most suited to you. But if you've done any research, you should know that the chances of an unsolicited manuscript being read, much less accepted, by a publisher are slim to none. There are thousands of people out there who are convinced they have the next best-seller sitting on their desk. And publishers, especially established ones, can't be bothered to look at them all. You'll need an agent or extraordinary luck until you're an established writer. Submit your work to every publisher who might be interested in whatever you wrote, not just people on your list. And be prepared to get rejected. Some of the best-known… [cont.]

Can you list these Americans?
Q. I have a math book that says "One effect of the presidential election of 2000 was to convince Americans that their votes count." I can't tell whether the author is just kidding around. convinced Americans that their votes "counted" I don't know why it replaced that word with asterisks. Just wanted to clarify that this was the 2000 election where the popular vote was widely known to have gone for Al Gore, among both Democrats and Republicans. I can only think of nine Americans who would have been convinced that their votes counted, and it went 5 to 4.

A. actaully it's true. any election that is incredibly close (as the 2000 election was) will show people that their vote does matter. how much it shows and individual person will depend on what state they are in, (voters in Florida feel more "powerful" as voters because they are so close to going either direction on the election)

Any recommendations for romantic American Classic Literature?
Q. I'm going to have to do a research project, and I didn't like the list she gave me. So I was wondering if anyone had any books by American authors that were romantic, and intriguing. Also it needs to have some sort of literary merit. This is for an Honors English class. So please, any suggestion would be helpful. If you could include a little summary, or a link to the synopsis, it would be great! Thank you in advance! Romantic, as in the genre or the story has romance, and also sorry if I was not clear, but I'm looking for novels. Hope this info helps. Romantic is just my preference.

A. Why don't you try the books of Edith Wharton, namely The House of Mirth (Lily Bart is a celebrated beauty who has to pay her whole life for one moment of deviance from the customs and exigences of society. She has always wanted to marry for money for as she puts it '[she] is expensive to maintain'. She is unable to marry the man she loves (Lawrence Sedley)simply because he is too poor.At the end, she dies, presumably from an overdose of sleeping pills, which we suspect to have been wilfully taken), The Custom of the Country ( Undine Spragg is a very beautiful young girl who is seeking to marry somebody rich. She has a dark past which is only hinted at and until we hear of it by direct reference we believe that it is only a broken… [cont.]
